Trichology is the scientific study of human hair and it’s
disorder’s and diseases. Clinical trichology is the diagnosis
and treatment of hair and scalp disorder’s and diseases.
Trichologists qualify and become registered with The Institute
of Trichologists who are the governing and qualifying body
of the profession. The Institute was founded in 1902.
Trichologists are able to diagnose and help most hair and
scalp disorders presented to them by using a detailed and personal
profile-building consultation process including careful examination
of the hair and scalp. Consultations have to reveal
important background information on possible contributing factors
such as genetics, stress, prescribed medication, health history,
dietary habits, childbirth, the menopause and hormone imbalances.
Quite often a trichologist will liaise with family GP’s
when it is suspected that blood tests are required to help
confirm the cause of hair loss, for example iron deficiency
or hormone imbalances can trigger hair loss.
